Were you born during a retrograde?

A planet is retrograde when, seen from Earth, it appears to move backwards through the zodiac. This calculator checks Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto at your birth and sorts them into direct, retrograde and, on the rare days a planet turned around, uncertain.

Check your birth retrogrades

Leave blank if you do not know it. We will check the whole local day instead of guessing noon.

What “retrograde” actually means

No planet reverses its orbit. Earth and the other planets all travel around the Sun in the same direction, at different speeds. When Earth overtakes a slower outer planet such as Mars or Saturn, that planet appears to drift backwards against the distant stars for a while, much as a car you pass on a motorway seems to slide back. Mercury and Venus orbit inside Earth’s orbit; they appear retrograde when they swing past between Earth and the Sun.

The calculator reads the planet’s apparent speed in longitude as seen from Earth. Negative speed is retrograde, positive is direct. Around a “station”, when the planet appears to stand still before turning, the speed passes through zero; the calculator flags that instead of guessing.

Why the Sun and Moon are never on the list

Seen from Earth, the Sun and Moon always move forward through the zodiac, so in this convention they are never retrograde. Calculated points such as the lunar nodes or Black Moon Lilith are not planets and are not counted here either.

Without a birth time

Retrograde periods last weeks or months, so on most dates the answer is the same all day. If you leave the time blank, Lunara checks your whole local birth date, from 00:00 to 23:59:59 in your birth city’s timezone, hour by hour plus both ends. If a planet turned around that day, it goes in the uncertain list with the local time of the station, found to about a minute. The hourly check is a sample: it is designed for stations, which are weeks apart, not for anything faster.

Worked example (fictional person)

“Elena” is invented for this page; the results are real calculator output. Born 20 May 1996 in Madrid (timezone Europe/Madrid):

Born at 14:30Retrograde: Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. Direct: Mars, Saturn.
Born at 06:30Retrograde: Mercury, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto. Direct: Venus, Mars, Saturn.
Time unknownUncertain: Venus, which stationed at about 08:07 GMT+2 that day (direct at 00:00, retrograde by 23:59). The other seven are the same all day.

Four of the six retrogrades at 14:30 are the slow outer planets, which every Madrid baby born that week shares. Venus is the one that depends on the hour.

Frequently asked questions

Was I born during Mercury retrograde?
Enter your birth date and city above. Mercury is retrograde roughly three times a year for about three weeks each time, so it depends on your exact date. If Mercury turned around on your birth date and you do not know the time, it is shown as uncertain with the local station time.
Does a retrograde planet in my birth chart mean something is wrong?
No. Retrograde is an optical effect of where Earth was in its orbit. Astrologers read it symbolically, as a question to reflect on; it is not a diagnosis, a fault or a prediction.
Why are so many of my outer planets retrograde?
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto each spend months of every year retrograde. Many people born around the same time share the same outer-planet retrogrades.
Do I need my birth time?
Usually not. Only on a day when a planet stations does the hour matter; then the calculator shows the local station time so you can compare it with a recorded birth time later.

Method: Swiss Ephemeris apparent geocentric longitude speed (°/day) for Mercury–Pluto, tropical zodiac. A speed below 0.000001°/day counts as a station.
