What retrograde is, and what it isn’t
Apparent motion. Mercury orbits closer to the Sun than Earth does. Around the time it passes between Earth and the Sun, it appears from Earth to slow, stop and move backwards against the stars for about three weeks. Mercury itself never reverses.
What astrology does with it. Traditionally, Mercury retrograde is read as a time for review: re-reading, re-checking, returning to unfinished conversations. That’s a symbolic tradition, not a mechanism. It doesn’t cause accidents, bring anyone back or decide a legal outcome, and it’s no reason to delay a medical or financial decision.
The year as a planning tool. If the tradition is useful to you, the table gives you three stretches to schedule reviews into, and the shadows show when each one starts to build and when it finishes.
