Your North and South Node: a familiar strength and a direction to practise

The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s apparent path. They are always exactly opposite each other. In modern astrology the South Node is often read as what comes easily and the North Node as a direction worth growing toward. You need your birth date and city; a birth time helps but is not required.

Find your North and South Node

Know your exact time? Add it for the degree. Leave it empty and the whole day is checked.

The city sets the local timezone for your birth date. No name or email needed.

What the nodes are

The Moon’s orbit is tilted against the ecliptic, so it crosses that plane at two points: the North Node, where the Moon heads northward, and the South Node, where it heads south. The axis drifts slowly backward through the zodiac, taking roughly a year and a half per sign. That is why people born within the same stretch of months share a nodal axis.

A practice, not a mission

Many astrologers read the South Node as familiar ground: capacities you already lean on. The North Node is read as a direction that may feel less natural and more rewarding with practice. Neither is good or bad, and nothing here is assigned to you. Treat the reading as a question you can try, not a verdict on your life.

The six nodal axes

Each axis joins two opposite signs. Your North Node is in one and your South Node in the other, so every axis can be read in two directions.

Aries–Libra

North Node in Aries, South Node in Libra

A Libra South Node points to an easy feel for other people: reading the room, finding the fair middle, making sure nobody is left out. That is a real skill, and you can keep it. The Aries North Node suggests a different muscle to train: knowing what you want and saying it first, before the group has settled on a view. Not louder, just earlier.

Everyday example: Someone asks where you would like to eat and you hear yourself say “anywhere is fine”, although one place came to mind straight away.

Once this week, name your preference before you ask anyone else for theirs, and notice what actually happens next.

North Node in Libra, South Node in Aries

An Aries South Node points to a self-starter: you can decide quickly, act alone and handle things without waiting for permission. That independence has carried you through plenty. The Libra North Node invites practice in the other direction: bringing another person into the decision while it is still open, and treating partnership as a craft rather than a delay.

Everyday example: You have already sorted the plan, booked the time or fixed the problem before the person it affects has heard about it.

Before your next shared decision, ask “what would you do?” and let the answer finish before you reply. What did you learn that you would have missed?

Taurus–Scorpio

North Node in Taurus, South Node in Scorpio

A Scorpio South Node points to depth: you can stay with hard feelings, sense what sits under the surface and go all the way into something. Few people can do that. The Taurus North Node suggests practising the plainer pleasures: steadiness, enough, the body at rest. Calm can be trusted as calm, not read as the silence before trouble.

Everyday example: A quiet, uneventful week starts to feel suspicious, and you go looking for what might be wrong.

Choose one simple physical comfort, such as a slow meal, a walk or warm light, and give it ten minutes without analysing it.

North Node in Scorpio, South Node in Taurus

A Taurus South Node points to steadiness: you know how to build comfort, keep what works and stay loyal through slow seasons. That patience is a gift. The Scorpio North Node invites practice in letting things change: looking honestly at what has gone stale, sharing more of what you hold, and allowing a closer kind of trust.

Everyday example: You keep a routine, a habit or an object mostly because it is familiar, though it stopped fitting a while ago.

Pick one small thing you hold onto out of habit and ask, plainly, “do I still want this?” Whatever the answer, you have looked.

Gemini–Sagittarius

North Node in Gemini, South Node in Sagittarius

A Sagittarius South Node points to big-picture thinking: conviction, a feel for meaning, the ability to see where things are heading. That vision is valuable. The Gemini North Node suggests getting curious about the small and specific: asking questions, checking the details, and hearing what this particular person actually means.

Everyday example: In a disagreement you explain your whole view of the matter before finding out what the other person meant by their first sentence.

In one conversation this week, ask three genuine questions before you offer an opinion.

North Node in Sagittarius, South Node in Gemini

A Gemini South Node points to a quick, versatile mind: you gather information fast, can talk with almost anyone and see several sides at once. The Sagittarius North Node invites practice in choosing: committing to a view, trusting a wider sense of direction, and moving before every fact is in.

Everyday example: You have a dozen tabs open comparing options for a decision that was, honestly, ready to be made two days ago.

Set a limit, say three sources, then decide. Afterwards, ask yourself what the extra research would really have changed.

Cancer–Capricorn

North Node in Cancer, South Node in Capricorn

A Capricorn South Node points to competence: you take responsibility, keep things running and hold steady when others cannot. People rely on that, rightly. The Cancer North Node suggests a softer practice: admitting needs, letting yourself be looked after, and giving feelings and home the same care you give your duties.

Everyday example: Someone asks how you are and you give a progress report on your tasks instead of an answer.

Answer “how are you?” once this week with a feeling rather than a status update. What would you ask for if you did not have to earn it first?

North Node in Capricorn, South Node in Cancer

A Cancer South Node points to care: you sense what people need, make them feel at home and notice moods early. That warmth matters. The Capricorn North Node invites practice in structure for your own aims: naming a goal out loud, setting a plan and keeping a commitment to yourself even when someone else could use you.

Everyday example: Your own project moves to “later” again because someone close to you needed a hand.

Put one block of time for your own goal in the calendar and keep it once, as you would keep a promise to a friend.

Leo–Aquarius

North Node in Leo, South Node in Aquarius

An Aquarius South Node points to perspective: you think about the whole group, keep a fair distance and bring ideas that are bigger than any one person. The Leo North Node suggests practising being seen as yourself: putting your name on what you make, letting warmth show, and enjoying the moment of attention instead of deflecting it.

Everyday example: You offer the idea that solves the problem, then credit “the team” before anyone can thank you.

Share one thing you made, with your name on it, and let whatever response comes actually land.

North Node in Aquarius, South Node in Leo

A Leo South Node points to warmth and presence: you can light up a room, create from the heart and be generous with yourself. That spark is real. The Aquarius North Node invites practice in contributing to something larger than one story: friendship among equals, shared causes, and letting the idea itself be the point.

Everyday example: A group effort you helped with goes well, and the good feeling fades a little because your part was not mentioned.

Do one useful thing for a group or cause this week where nobody will know it was you, and notice how it feels.

Virgo–Pisces

North Node in Virgo, South Node in Pisces

A Pisces South Node points to imagination and compassion: you sense the whole, feel with others and can hold possibilities that are not yet shaped. The Virgo North Node suggests practising form: routines, details and small useful acts that turn a vague intention into something you can hold.

Everyday example: A plan you care about stays in “someday” because it never gets broken down into a first concrete step.

Shrink one dream into a fifteen-minute task, give it a date, and do it.

North Node in Pisces, South Node in Virgo

A Virgo South Node points to precision: you notice what is off, improve things and help in practical ways. That care for detail is a strength. The Pisces North Node invites practice in trust: leaving room for the unfinished, resting without earning it, and following imagination before it is perfected.

Everyday example: You rewrite a short message five times before sending it, though the first version said what you meant.

Let one thing go out at “good enough” this week. What happened, and what did you do with the time you saved?

A worked example: RAYE

Lunara’s calculation for the singer RAYE, born on 24 October 1997 in London, puts her true North Node at about 19° Virgo all day (18.98° to 19.00° in hourly samples), so her South Node sits at the same degree of Pisces. Because the node moves so little in a day, her birth time does not change the sign. Read through this page, the axis pairs Pisces imagination as the familiar ground with Virgo craft as the direction; that is a symbolic lens on a chart, not a claim about her life.

True node, mean node

This calculator uses the true (osculating) node, which wobbles back and forth around its average path. Some calculators use the mean node, a smoothed average. The two can differ by up to about 1.5–2°, which occasionally puts them in different signs near a boundary. Both are legitimate conventions; if another site shows a slightly different degree, that is usually why.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the North Node and the South Node?
They are the two ends of one axis, always exactly opposite: same degree, opposite signs. In modern interpretation the South Node describes familiar strengths and habits, and the North Node a direction that grows with practice. Both are part of you.
Do I need my birth time?
Usually not for the sign. The node usually moves only a few arc-minutes in a day, so most birth dates give one North Node sign however the hours fall. With an exact time this page shows the degree; without one it samples the whole local day hourly and shows the signs it finds, warning you if the node is close to a sign boundary.
Why does another calculator show a different degree or sign?
Most often because it uses the mean node rather than the true node. They can differ by up to about 1.5–2°, which near a boundary can change the sign. Other causes are a different timezone for the birth place or a different recorded birth time.
Is my North Node my destiny or life purpose?
Not on this page. The nodes are read here as a symbolic invitation: a direction you can try if it rings true. They are not a forecast, a diagnosis or a judgement on your choices.

Method: Swiss Ephemeris true lunar node, tropical zodiac, geocentric, using Lunara’s central calculation. The South Node is the exact opposite point. The city sets the IANA timezone for your birth date; historical clock records can be imperfect. Without a birth time the day is sampled hourly from local midnight to the last second of the day, so the listed signs are samples, not a continuous bound.
