Every birthday turns the wheel one house. Which one is yours this year?

Annual profections are a traditional timing technique: each year of life is linked to one house of the birth chart, starting with the 1st house in your first year and moving one house per birthday, so the cycle repeats every twelve years. With your rising sign, the house also gives a sign, and that sign’s traditional ruler is called the ruler, or lord, of the year.

Find this year’s profection

Your age since your last birthday, from 0 to 120.

Your rising sign, not your Sun sign.

How to use it

  1. Enter your age in completed years, meaning your age since your last birthday. If you turned 34 last month, enter 34.
  2. If you know your rising sign, choose it. If not, leave “I don’t know my rising sign”: you will still get the house, but not the sign or year ruler.
  3. Read the house reflection and prompt. Your profection year runs from this birthday to the next one, not from January 1.

Method

Profections count houses, not degrees. Using whole-sign houses, your rising sign is the 1st house, the next sign is the 2nd, and so on. At age 0 the profection is on the 1st house; each birthday moves it on by one. The house for an age is that age divided by twelve, take the remainder, plus one: age 0 is the 1st house, age 11 the 12th, age 12 the 1st again, age 34 the 11th.

The profected sign is the sign that many places on from your rising sign, and the year ruler is that sign’s traditional ruler: Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, the Sun, Jupiter or Saturn. This page uses the traditional rulers only, because that is how the technique is described in the traditional sources; it does not swap in Uranus, Neptune or Pluto.

Limits

This is simple counting from two things you tell us. It does not calculate your Ascendant, your natal placements or house cusps, and it does not produce forecasts, solar returns or exact calendar dates. It never uses your Sun sign in place of your rising sign: without a rising sign, only the house is shown.

If you are unsure of your rising sign, an exact birth time matters: the rising sign changes about every two hours. The house reflections are symbolic prompts written for this page. They are not predictions about money, health, relationships or anything else, and astrology is not a scientifically validated method.

Traditional context

Annual profections belong to a wider family of traditional timing techniques. Ptolemy describes advancing from the birth chart one sign for each year and taking the ruler of the sign reached, alongside other releasing points and monthly and daily systems; see Ptolemy’s discussion of time rulers, hosted by Skyscript (Tetrabiblos, Book IV, chapter 10). This calculator does something simpler: it uses your completed age and your rising sign with whole-sign houses, and does not reproduce every method in that text.

Your rising sign also sets your chart ruler, the planet many astrologers read as the guide to the whole chart: find yours with the chart ruler calculator.

Frequently asked questions

When does a profection year start?
On your birthday. A profection year runs from one birthday to the next, so if your birthday is in August, your current profection year started last August and ends the day before this coming one. It does not reset on January 1.
Can I use annual profections without my birth time?
Partly. The house only needs your age, so you can see which house is active. The profected sign and year ruler depend on your rising sign, which needs an accurate birth time. This calculator will not guess your rising sign or use your Sun sign instead.
Why traditional rulers only?
Annual profections come from traditional astrology, which used the seven visible planets as sign rulers. Modern co-rulers such as Pluto for Scorpio are not part of the technique as it is usually taught, so this page leaves them out.
What does the year ruler mean?
In traditional practice the ruler of the profected sign becomes a point of focus for that year: astrologers look at where it sits in the birth chart and how it is placed. This page names the ruler but does not read its natal placement or forecast anything from it.
