Your rising sign is the doorway. Which planet holds the key?
Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your Ascendant, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It is not the ruler of your Sun sign, not your “dominant planet” and not whichever placement looks strongest. It follows from the rising sign alone, which is why two people with the same Sun sign can have completely different chart rulers.

Why the rising sign, not the Sun sign
The Ascendant is where a birth chart begins: the first house starts there. Many astrologers read its ruling planet as a guide to the whole chart, because it links that starting point to a planet sitting somewhere else. Where the ruler falls, by sign and house, is read as a symbolic pointer to where your attention tends to travel.
Traditional and modern rulers
Before Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered, the seven visible bodies each ruled one or two signs. Many astrologers still use that scheme. Others give Scorpio to Pluto, Aquarius to Uranus and Pisces to Neptune, and many keep both. This page shows the traditional ruler first and, for those three signs, the modern co-ruler beside it. Neither is the one correct answer: use the convention your own practice follows, or read both.
A symbol, not a fate
A chart ruler is something to reflect with. It is not a forecast, a diagnosis or a verdict on your character. If a description does not fit you, set it aside.
The Midheaven is a separate angle, at the top of the chart rather than on the eastern horizon: find yours with the Midheaven calculator.
Your rising sign also sets your yearly profection, counted one house per birthday: find this year’s house.

Frequently asked questions
- Is my chart ruler the same as my Sun sign’s ruler?
- Only by coincidence. The chart ruler follows the rising sign, so someone with a Taurus Sun and Leo rising has the Sun as chart ruler, not Venus.
- Do I need my birth time?
- To work out your rising sign, yes: the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, so the time needs to be accurate to within a few minutes. If you already know your rising sign, choose it from the list and no birth data is needed. If you do not know your birth time, this calculator will not guess one.
- Which ruler should I use for Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces rising?
- Both conventions are in use. Traditional astrology uses Mars, Saturn and Jupiter; modern astrology often adds Pluto, Uranus and Neptune. Many astrologers read the traditional ruler first and the modern one as a further layer.
- What does the house of my chart ruler mean?
- Astrologers often read the ruler’s house as an area of life the chart keeps returning to. Houses depend on the exact birth time and on the house system. This page uses Placidus, the system in Lunara’s natal chart; Whole Sign or other systems can place the ruler in a different house.
