Elements calculator · Free · No email

Your Sun sign is one placement. Count the rest.

Each zodiac sign belongs to one of four elements: Fire, Earth, Air or Water. This calculator counts how many of your planets sit in each, using your birth date and city. A birth time is optional; houses and the Rising sign are not part of this count.

  • FireAries, Leo, Sagittarius
  • EarthTaurus, Virgo, Capricorn
  • AirGemini, Libra, Aquarius
  • WaterCancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Count your elements

Leave it blank if you don’t have a reliable time. The whole local birth day is checked instead of guessing noon.

The city sets the local timezone for your birth date. No name or email needed.

How the count works

Every counted planet goes into the element of its tropical zodiac sign, once, with the same weight. The Sun counts as one, exactly like Mars. Nothing else is added: no lunar nodes, Lilith, Chiron, Ascendant, Midheaven or houses, and no extra points for any planet.

The result is a raw count, such as “2 of 5”. It is not a percentage of your personality, a strength score or a diagnosis. Other sites weight planets differently, so their element balance can differ from this one.

Five planets or all ten

By default the calculator counts the five personal planets: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. These move quickly, so they differ most from person to person.

Switch to all ten to add Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Those move slowly and stay in one sign for a year or many years, so everyone born around the same time shares them. A cluster of outer planets in one element is common to a whole generation, not a personal signature.

That is why the page tells you whether an element is empty among the five personal planets but present once all ten are counted.

Ties and empty elements

If two or more elements share the highest count, they are all shown as leading. The calculator never picks one of them for you.

An element with a count of zero is simply not represented among the counted planets. In astrology it is read as a theme to notice, not a missing human ability. Nobody lacks practicality, feeling, thought or drive because of an empty element.

Without a birth time

If you leave the time blank, Lunara checks your whole local birth day in your city’s timezone and finds every moment a planet changed sign, usually only the Moon. Each stretch of the day between those changes is counted as its own complete chart. You see the counts for each stretch with its local times, or a single count if nothing changed.

An element is called empty all day only if it is empty in every stretch. If it is empty in some stretches but not others, it depends on your birth time. Nothing is guessed from noon.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my birth time?
No. With a time, you get one count for that moment. Without one, you get a count for each part of your birth day in which every planet kept the same sign. On most days that is one or two parts, because only the Moon usually changes sign.
Why is my result different from another calculator?
Many element calculators weight the Sun, Moon or Ascendant more heavily, or include the Ascendant and other points. This one counts each planet once, Sun to Mars by default, or Sun to Pluto if you choose all ten.
What does it mean if I have no Water, or no Earth?
Only that none of the counted planets is in that element’s signs. It is a symbolic observation, not a lack of feeling, practicality or anything else.
Does this include my Rising sign or houses?
No. Those need an exact birth time and place and are not part of this count. The free birth chart shows them when you add a reliable time.

Signs are also grouped into three qualities: cardinal, fixed and mutable. The birth chart modality calculator counts your ten planets that way, with a recorded birth time.
