Birth chart modality calculator

Astrology sorts the twelve signs into three groups of four, called modalities or qualities: cardinal, fixed and mutable. You probably know which one your Sun sign belongs to. This calculator counts all ten of your planets, Sun through Pluto, one vote each, and shows every planet, sign and group so you can check the count yourself. It needs a recorded birth time.

Example: a fictional chart

This is Lunara’s invented sample chart, not your chart or a real person’s: 1 January 1990, 12:00, London, the same fictional chart as the sample reading. Counted by the same rule as the form below.

Count your chart

Your birth details and chart are kept only in this page’s memory for this calculation, never in the page address or browser storage. If you open your full chart and buy a reading, the details needed to write it are stored with your order.

The city sets the local time zone for your birth date.

Three groups of four

After the four elements, astrology sorts the signs a second way, into three groups of four. They’re called the qualities, modalities or quadruplicities. Each group holds one sign of every element. As Cafe Astrology’s explanation of the qualities puts it, the cardinal signs are known as the initiators, and the three are sometimes pictured as parts of a wheel: the rim, the hub and the spokes.

  • Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn). Cardinal signs are often described as the ones that initiate. As a prompt: start something.
  • Fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius). Fixed signs are often described as the ones that hold steady. As a prompt: keep something going.
  • Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces). Mutable signs are often described as the ones that adapt. As a prompt: change the approach.

Those prompts are actions you can try, not descriptions of who you are. A planet in a fixed sign doesn’t make anyone stubborn, and a mutable count doesn’t make anyone unreliable.

How the count works

Ten bodies, one vote each: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Each counts in the group of the sign it’s in. Nothing else is counted, and nothing is weighted, so the three numbers always add up to ten and you can check every line in the table.

That simplicity has a cost. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto spend years in one sign, so everyone born within a few years of you probably shares them, and they can tilt the count. Methods that weight the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or chart ruler more heavily can give a different leading group. Neither answer is the true one; they’re different conventions, and this one is Lunara’s.

A one-tally worksheet

Write your three numbers at the top of a page. Then pick one real task you’re in the middle of, and give it three roles:

  • Start: decide the first step and when it happens.
  • Keep going: do the next repeat, the same way as last time.
  • Change approach: notice what isn’t working and try it differently.

An invented example: a shared allotment plot. Starting is booking the plot and buying seeds. Keeping going is the weekly watering rota. Changing approach is moving the beans after the first bed floods.

Then answer one question: which role does this task need next?

Your count doesn’t answer it for you. A chart heavy in one group might make that role the familiar one, or the one you reach for by habit. The task decides what it needs.

Signs are also grouped by element. The birth chart elements calculator counts fire, earth, air and water, also one vote per planet. To see how the same ten planets are spread around the zodiac instead of how they’re grouped, try the birth chart shape calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Which signs are cardinal, fixed and mutable?
Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Each group has one sign of each element.
Is the highest count my dominant modality?
It’s the group with the most of your ten planets, nothing more. Many astrologers weigh the Sun, Moon, Ascendant or chart ruler more heavily, which can give a different answer. This page gives each planet one equal vote so the arithmetic stays visible.
Why do people my age get similar counts?
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in one sign for years, and Jupiter and Saturn for months, so people born close together often share several of the ten signs. That can tilt an unweighted count more than any personal planet does.
What if two groups tie?
Then the count is a tie and the page says so. It doesn’t pick a winner, because the method has no tiebreak.
What if a group has no planets?
It means none of the ten bodies are in those four signs. It isn’t a missing ability, and the prompt below still works.
Why does it need a birth time?
The Moon moves about 12° to 15° a day and can change sign, and with it the modality, during a single day. Rather than guess, the form waits for a recorded time.

Method: Lunara’s central Swiss Ephemeris calculation, tropical zodiac, geocentric, from a recorded birth time and the city’s time zone. Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto each count once in the modality of their sign. The nodes, Ascendant, Midheaven, Chiron and asteroids are left out, and nothing is weighted. That equal-vote count is Lunara’s convention, chosen because you can check it; it isn’t the only method astrologers use. Modalities are a symbolic grouping in astrology, not a personality test or a measurement.
