Free birth chart reading online: what you get, what costs extra

Originally published 19 January 2026. Revised 7 October 2026: rewritten to describe what Lunara's own free chart and paid report actually contain.

A birth chart reading mixes two different things, and it helps to keep them apart before you look at any result.

The first is calculation: from a date, time and place, software works out where the Sun, Moon and planets were along the zodiac. Lunara uses the Swiss Ephemeris, in the tropical zodiac.

The second is interpretation. "Venus in Taurus" is a calculated position. What Venus in Taurus is said to mean comes from astrological tradition. It's symbolic, not a measured fact about your personality, and nothing on this page claims otherwise.

A free chart mostly gives you the first part, plus short labels for the second. You can calculate your free birth chart here and keep reading alongside it.

What the calculator asks for

The form has three steps and one optional extra:

  • Birth date. Day, month and year. This is the only required field.
  • Birth time. Hours and minutes on a 24-hour clock, so 3:15 in the afternoon is 15:15. An hour on its own is read as on the hour. You can leave it blank.
  • Birth city. Start typing and pick your city from the list. If you type a city but don't pick it, the form reminds you once and then lets you continue without it.
  • First name. Optional. It only labels the result.

No sign-up is needed.

What the free chart shows

With a date, a time and a chosen city, the results page includes:

  • A chart wheel with the planets placed around the zodiac.
  • Your Sun, Moon and Rising signs, each with its degree within the sign.
  • A balance summary counting how the planets spread across the four elements and three modes.
  • Planet placements: the sign for each planet, its degree, its house, and a retrograde label where it applies. The list also covers the North Node and Chiron.
  • Houses, using the Placidus system.
  • Aspects, meaning the main angles between planets, with the tightest shown first.
  • Patterns such as stelliums or T-squares, if your chart has any.

The labels are short and general: traditional themes, not how they play out in your life.

If you don't know your birth time

Some birth certificates record a time; many don't, and family memories are often rounded to "morning". You don't need to guess.

Leave the time blank. The calculator then treats your chart as date-only:

  • No Rising sign and no houses. Those depend on the exact minute and location, so the page shows "Time needed" instead of a sign.
  • No chart wheel. Degrees are replaced by "≈", because positions shift during the day.
  • The Moon can stay open. The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days. If it changed sign during your local birth day, the page shows both signs, for example "Gemini / Cancer", rather than picking one for you. The Sun can do the same on the day it changes sign.
  • No Moon aspects or patterns. The faster-moving Moon is left out of aspects, and pattern detection is skipped.

Add your city even without a time. The calculator uses it to check what happened across your local birth day. A time only counts when a city is chosen too; on its own it isn't enough for a Rising sign or houses.

If you later find a reliable time, use "Change birth details" on the results page and recalculate.

Your first ten minutes with the result

You don't need to read everything. Try this instead.

1. Check for a Rising sign. If it shows "Time needed", read the page as date-only.

2. Pick one placement in the planet list. Choose a slower planet whose sign is clear, such as Mercury, Venus or Mars, rather than an uncertain Moon. Note the sign.

3. Read its short description as a theme, not a verdict. Suppose your list says Mercury in Virgo. Astrological tradition links that with attention to detail and with careful, practical thinking. That's a symbolic description. It doesn't prove anything about you.

4. Turn it into one question about a real situation. Here's an invented example. You're in a group chat planning a weekend away. You've typed a reply, deleted it, and typed it again. A Mercury-in-Virgo question might be: "Am I checking this message because something in it is unclear, or because I want it to be perfect before anyone sees it?"

5. Answer honestly, including "no". If it doesn't fit, write that down. A question that misses is still information, not a sign you're reading the chart wrong.

Keep it about your own experience. A chart can't tell you what someone else is thinking, whether a decision will work out, or what will happen next.

The free chart is useful on its own

You can stop here. The free chart gives you calculated positions, shows what's missing without a birth time, and is enough to start asking better questions.

What costs extra

The optional paid product is a personalized natal chart report for one person. It's a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Here's what it is and isn't:

  • It's automated. After payment, Lunara's report builder recalculates your chart from the same birth details and assembles written sections from interpretation copy that matches your placements. Nobody writes it by hand for you.
  • The copy is AI-assisted editorial written for Lunara. No independent astrologer reviews your report or this article.
  • It's a reading of your natal chart. It isn't a forecast, therapy, a personality test or a guarantee of accuracy.
  • Delivery. The report opens on Lunara straight after checkout. A private link to return to it is also emailed to the address used at checkout. You can print it or save it as a PDF from your browser, and it includes a reflection notebook.
  • Price. It's shown on the offer button and again at checkout, and it may vary, for example by country.

Your free chart is the same whether or not you buy anything.

Before you decide

Lunara wrote this article. To see what the paid format looks like, read the sample natal reading. It's built from clearly fictional birth details, not a real customer's chart, and it's a demonstration, not a testimonial. If you then want your own, there's an optional paid personal birth chart reading. It's a written interpretation of your chart, not a forecast or a guarantee, and what's included and the price are shown before you buy.

Your Sun sign is only one placement

See your planetary placements. Use a reliable birth time for your rising sign and houses. A complete written natal report is optional and paid.
