In a September 22, 2026 ELLE interview by Samuel Maude, "Sombr's Emotional Rescue", Sombr talks about his newer music covering a wider range of sounds. He doesn't tie himself to one style. "I don't care how a song ends up, whatever is best for the song," he says. The writer also describes hearing unfinished mixes and being asked for feedback on each track.
That's about as much of the interview as we use here. It covers more ground than songwriting, and the rest isn't material for an astrology article.
What interested us is the idea of a song having its own needs, apart from a fixed sound. It's a useful way into a birth chart too, because "Cancer" on its own tells you very little about how anyone writes.
Mitski described something similar in 2026, when a stripped-down plan for her album grew an orchestra.
What we know, and what we don't
A public radio artist profile (Movin 92.5, Hubbard Radio) gives his birth name as Shane Michael Boose, born July 5, 2005, in New York City. ELLE also says he was born in New York City. Neither is a birth certificate, and we haven't found a recorded birth time.
So this piece has no Rising sign, no houses and no exact degrees. We didn't pick a convenient hour, either. Lunara's central Swiss Ephemeris calculation sampled that New York day every hour from midnight to 11 p.m. local time, plus 11:59 p.m., in the tropical zodiac. Across all of those samples:
- the Sun is in Cancer;
- Mercury and Venus are both in Leo, less than a degree apart;
- Mars is in Aries.
The Moon is the open question. It moved from Gemini into Cancer at about 3:07 a.m. Eastern time, so his Moon sign depends on a time nobody has published. We leave it out.
These are hourly samples, not a minute-by-minute proof. Nothing else in our calculation came close to changing sign.
One sign is a label. Several are questions.
A Cancer Sun is real, and it's the part most fans already know. Traditional astrology links Cancer with memory, home and the people you feel you belong to. As a description of a whole person, though, it runs out quickly.
It gets more useful when different placements take different jobs. For songwriting, you could ask three separate things:
Where does the material come from? That's a Sun question. With the Sun in Cancer, the tradition points towards remembered places, family and familiar rooms, and the feeling of being inside or outside a group.
How does it get said? Mercury is the planet of words and phrasing. In Leo it's traditionally read as wanting to be heard, saying something with a bit of colour, writing as if there's an audience in the room.
What makes it feel finished? Venus is read as taste: what you find beautiful and what you'd be glad to show people. Venus in Leo is associated with warmth, a liking for the bold version, and pride in the result.
In this chart Mercury and Venus also sit together. That's a conjunction: two planets close together along the zodiac. By the usual convention, a conjunction counts within a few degrees, and here they stayed within one degree in every sample. Astrologers read this pairing as words and taste working closely, where the way something is phrased and whether it sounds right are hard to separate.
None of this explains Sombr's music, his success or anything about him personally. Lots of people share these placements and never write a song. And it would be too neat to say a Leo Venus is why he follows the song. He described a choice in one interview. The chart is a set of traditional symbols. We're putting them next to each other because the comparison makes for a good question, not because one proves the other.
An invented example
This one is made up. It isn't Sombr's process, a lyric or anyone's chart.
Say you're writing about the night a friend's car broke down outside a closed gas station. First, the material: you write down what actually happened, including the vending machine that only took exact change. Next, the voice. Do you name the gas station and the friend, or keep it to "the lights going off one by one"? You try both and keep the plainer line. Then the finish. You decide the second verse loses its drums, so the listener hears the quiet you remember.
Each decision answers a different question. You might be confident about the material and unsure about the voice, and that's information too.
Three prompts for your own chart
Look up where your own Sun, Mercury and Venus sit, then try these. Disagree with any of them if they don't fit.
- Material: What's one real scene you keep coming back to? Write it down plainly, as it happened.
- Voice: How directly do you want to say it, and who do you imagine hearing it?
- Finish: What one change would make it feel finished to you, rather than to an audience you're guessing at?
You don't need to write songs for this. The same questions work for a message you've been drafting or a story you tell about yourself.
Find your placements
Calculate your free birth chart to see your Sun, Mercury and Venus signs. If you don't know your birth time, leave it blank. The calculator won't make one up, and it'll show you when a placement could be in either of two signs.
If you'd like your chart written out, there's an optional, paid personal birth chart reading. It's automated and written from Lunara's interpretation copy for your placements, not by an astrologer, and it isn't a prediction or advice. You can read the complete fictional sample first, and the price for your country is shown before you decide.
