Birth chart aspects calculator

An aspect is an angle between two planets in your birth chart. This calculator lists every conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition between the Sun, Moon and eight planets, how far each one is from the exact angle, and the orb (allowed distance) Lunara uses for that pair. It needs a recorded birth time.

Example: a fictional chart

This is Lunara’s invented sample chart, not your chart or a real person’s: 1 January 1990, 12:00, London, the same fictional chart as the sample reading. It has 12 major aspects between the ten bodies; the 5 closest to exact are shown.

Fictional sample chart: the 5 major aspects closest to exact, of 12
AspectExact angleDistance from exactAllowed orb here
Jupiter opposition Uranus180°0.64°5.50°
Sun conjunction Neptune0°1.22°8.00°
Saturn sextile Pluto60°1.44°3.90°
Moon trine Jupiter120°1.88°7.30°
Moon sextile Uranus60°2.52°5.40°

Take Sun conjunction Neptune. The two are 1.22° away from an exact 0° conjunction. The base orb for a conjunction is 7°, plus 1.5° because the Sun or Moon is involved, minus 0.5° because an outer planet is involved, which allows 8.00° here. 1.22° is inside that, so it makes the list.

How the orbs work here

Lunara’s chart starts from a base orb for each aspect: conjunction 7°, opposition 6°, square 5.8°, trine 5.8°, sextile 4.4°. It adds 1.5° when the Sun or Moon is one of the pair and takes off 0.5° when Uranus, Neptune or Pluto is. These are this site’s settings, not a universal rule; other astrologers and sites use different orbs, so an aspect near the edge may appear on one site and not another.

Signs are only a rough guide. Two planets in the same sign can be more than an orb apart, so they aren’t conjunct. Two planets in different signs can still be close: 29° Aries and 1° Taurus are only 2° apart.

The five major aspects

conjunction (0°): Blend
Two planets close together. Astrologers read their themes as hard to separate, for better or worse.
sextile (60°): Cooperate
Read as an opening: the two themes can work together if you use it.
square (90°): Friction
Read as tension between two themes that both want attention. Friction can also be what gets things moving.
trine (120°): Flow
Read as ease between two themes. Easy can also mean taken for granted.
opposition (180°): Opposite perspectives
Read as two themes pulling from opposite sides, often asking for a balance between them.

None of these is good or bad, and none predicts what will happen. They’re ways of asking how two parts of a chart relate. When three planets are all in trine with each other, that’s a grand trine; the grand trine calculator checks all three edges.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an aspect depend on degrees, not signs?
An aspect is measured in degrees between two planets. Two planets in the same sign can be too far apart to count as a conjunction, and two planets in neighbouring signs can be only a degree or two apart. Sign pairs are a rough guide; the degrees decide.
What is an orb?
The orb is how far from the exact angle an aspect is still counted. There is no universal rule: astrologers use different orbs. This page shows the orb Lunara’s chart uses for each pair. Conjunctions get the widest base orb, sextiles the narrowest, the Sun or Moon adds a little, and Uranus, Neptune or Pluto takes a little away.
Why do I need a birth time?
The Moon moves about 13° a day, so without a time its aspects can appear or disappear. This calculator only works from a recorded time and won’t guess noon. Without a time you can still see your planets’ signs in the free birth chart; slower planets’ aspects change little in a day.
Does this score my relationship or say whether an aspect is good?
No. This page lists aspects in one person’s chart. It doesn’t compare two people, give a compatibility score, or say any aspect is good or bad.

Method: Lunara’s central Swiss Ephemeris calculation, tropical zodiac, geocentric. Aspects come from the same aspect calculation as the free birth chart; this page shows only the five major types between Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Angles, nodes, Chiron and minor aspects are left out. Text written with AI assistance. Aspects are a symbolic tradition, not measured facts about your personality or your future.
