Empty house calculator

An empty house is one with none of the ten planets in it. That’s common: ten bodies spread across twelve houses always leaves at least two empty, and most charts have more. An empty house isn’t a missing part of your life. This tool shows exactly which houses are empty in your chart and where to look instead: the sign on the house cusp and the house its ruling planet occupies.

Find your empty houses

The city sets the latitude and the local time zone for your birth date.

What “empty” means here

A house counts as empty when none of the ten bodies listed below the calculator falls inside it. Houses aren’t signs: a house is a slice of the sky based on your birth time and place, and its starting edge (the cusp) can fall in any sign.

The result depends on three things you should know about. The clock: house cusps move roughly one degree every four minutes, so a planet near a cusp can change house with a few minutes’ difference. The house system: Placidus is used here, and other systems such as Whole Sign or Equal can give different empty houses. And the list of bodies: adding Chiron or the nodes would fill some houses this tool calls empty.

How to read an empty house

Traditionally an empty house is read through its cusp sign and the planet that rules that sign. If your 7th house is empty with a Libra cusp, look at Venus, the ruler of Libra, and the house Venus sits in. That house is where the 7th house’s topics are said to connect to the rest of your chart.

An empty house says nothing about whether something will or won’t happen in that area. It doesn’t mean a missing relationship, career, health problem or bank balance. It means no planet sits there, so you read that area through its ruler.

Worked example: a fictional chart

This is Lunara’s public fictional sample chart: 1 January 1990, 12:00, London. It isn’t your chart or a real person’s; it’s the same invented chart used in our guide to reading a birth chart and the sample reading. Calculated once with the method below.

Empty here: 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th. Take the 4th house (home and roots). No planet sits in it. Its cusp is in Cancer, traditionally ruled by the Moon, and the Moon sits in the 12th house (rest and privacy). So the tradition reads home topics in this chart through rest and privacy, not as something missing.

The reflection question the tool would offer for that house: Think of one recent moment involving home, family history and where you recharge. Did anything from rest, privacy and what happens out of view shape how it went, and is that a link you want more or less of?

Two cautions from the same chart. The 5th cusp falls in the last degree of Cancer; a few minutes’ difference in birth time would move it into the next sign, with a different ruler. And the 7th house isn’t empty here only because Pluto counts as a planet; a method that leaves out the outer planets would call it empty.

Frequently asked questions

Is an empty 7th house bad for relationships?
No. An empty 7th house only means none of the ten planets fall in that slice of your chart. Read it through the sign on the 7th cusp and the house its ruling planet occupies. It isn’t a forecast about partners or marriage.
How many empty houses is normal?
At least two, because ten bodies can occupy at most ten of the twelve houses. Charts with planets grouped closely together have more.
Why do other calculators show different empty houses?
They may use a different house system (Whole Sign, Equal, Koch), count extra points such as Chiron or the nodes, or use a slightly different birth time. Each of those can move a planet across a cusp.
Can I use this without a birth time?
No. Houses depend on the exact time and place. Without a recorded time, read your planets by sign instead, which our free birth chart calculator does without inventing a time.

Method: Lunara’s central Swiss Ephemeris calculation, tropical zodiac, Placidus houses. Counted bodies: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (the Sun and Moon count as planets by convention). Not counted: lunar nodes, Chiron, Lilith, asteroids, the Ascendant or the Midheaven. Rulers are traditional; Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces also have modern co-rulers (Pluto, Uranus and Neptune), which some astrologers use instead, so a ruler’s house can differ by method.
