What Do the Houses in Astrology Mean? A Plain Guide to All 12

Rewritten and published 14 October 2026. An earlier draft of this page was never served; it has been replaced, not updated.

The houses are twelve sectors of a birth chart. Astrology reads each one as an area of life: how you approach things, money and belongings, home, work, close partnerships and so on. A house isn't a zodiac sign. Signs describe a style, and houses describe where in life that style is said to show up.

That's the tradition's symbolism. A house placement doesn't cause anything, and it can't predict what will happen to you.

This guide was written by Lunara, with AI assistance. Lunara sells an optional automated birth chart reading, which comes up at the end.

Planet, sign, house

Every row of a birth chart combines three things, and they answer different questions:

  • The planet is what: Venus is read as what you value and enjoy, Mars as drive, Mercury as thinking and talking.
  • The sign is how, the style. Venus in Taurus is traditionally steady and sensory; Venus in Gemini is quicker and more talkative.
  • The house is where, the life area.

Here's an invented row, not from anyone's real chart: Venus in Taurus in the 6th house. Read slowly, that's enjoyment (Venus), in a steady, sensory style (Taurus), in the area of daily work and routines (6th). A reasonable reflection is: where could ordinary routines include something you actually enjoy?

You can test that kind of reading without believing anything. Pick one routine this week, add one small pleasant thing to it, try it for three days, and drop it if it doesn't help.

The twelve houses

The houses are counted in order around the chart, starting from the Ascendant.

1st house: approach and presentation. How you start things and the first impression you tend to give. Prompt: how do you usually walk into a room where you know nobody?

2nd house: your own resources and values. What you have, earn and look after, and what you think is worth having. Prompt: what's one thing you own that you'd replace straight away if you lost it, and why?

3rd house: everyday communication and local learning. Messages, conversations, neighbours, short trips and the things you pick up close to home. Prompt: who do you talk to most in an ordinary week?

4th house: home and roots. Where you come from and what makes a place feel like home. Prompt: what's one small thing that makes a room feel like yours?

5th house: play, creativity and romance. What you do for the pleasure of it, including making things and flirting. Prompt: what did you last do purely because it was fun?

6th house: daily work and routines. The tasks, habits and small duties that fill a normal day. Prompt: which part of your daily routine would you keep even if no one required it?

7th house: one-to-one partnerships and agreements. Close partners, collaborators and the people you make deals with. Prompt: what do you expect from the other person when you agree to work with someone? If Saturn sits here in your chart, see Saturn in the 7th house for a practical take on commitments.

8th house: shared resources and intimacy. What's held jointly with others, from shared money to trust and closeness. Prompt: what's easy for you to share, and what isn't? For one placement here, the Moon in the 8th house separates feelings, agreements and permission.

9th house: study, beliefs and travel. Learning that widens your view, the ideas you live by and longer journeys. Prompt: what's a subject you'd study if time and money weren't an issue?

10th house: public work and reputation. The role you play in public and what you're known for. Prompt: what would you want a colleague to say you're good at?

11th house: friends, groups and hopes. Friendships, communities and the plans you share with them. Prompt: which group do you feel most at ease in, and what does it hope for?

12th house: privacy, solitude and what happens behind the scenes. Time alone, rest and the things you do out of view. Prompt: where do you go, or what do you do, when you need to be left alone?

Traditional astrology also sorts the houses into three groups. The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th are called angular, the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th succedent, and the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th cadent. These are traditional categories. They don't make anyone stronger or weaker.

Empty houses

Most charts have several houses with no planets in them, because there are twelve houses and only ten planets, and planets often cluster. An empty house doesn't delete that area of your life or make it unimportant. A 7th house with no planets is not a forecast about relationships.

Astrologers often read an empty house through the sign on its cusp and that sign's traditional ruling planet. The cusp sign in your chart depends on your birth time and place, so it's different for different people. The empty house calculator shows which of your houses are empty, the sign that starts each one, its traditional ruler and where that ruler sits.

Signs and houses aren't paired

Many guides, including Cafe Astrology's overview of the houses, link each house with a "natural" sign: the 1st with Aries, the 2nd with Taurus and so on round the zodiac. That's a teaching association. It doesn't mean your 1st house is in Aries. Your 1st house starts at your Rising sign, whichever sign that is, and the other houses follow from there.

Cafe Astrology describes the same split we use here: signs show how planets express themselves, and houses show where. Its guide to signs on the houses reads the sign on each cusp as the area where that sign's qualities get expressed. Both are paraphrased from cafeastrology.com, read 14 October 2026.

You need a reliable birth time

Houses depend on the exact time and place of birth. The Ascendant moves through a whole sign in about two hours, so a guessed time can shift every house.

If you don't know your birth time, don't let a site quietly use noon. Read your planets by sign and leave houses out. Our guide to a birth chart without a birth time explains what you can still read. Lunara's free calculator lets you leave the time blank and shows no houses rather than guessing.

House systems

There's more than one way to draw the twelve houses, and they don't always agree. Planet positions stay the same in every system; only the house boundaries move.

  • Placidus, which Lunara uses, divides the sky by time. The 1st house starts at the exact degree of the Ascendant and the 10th at the Midheaven (MC), and houses come out unequal in size.
  • Whole Sign gives each house one entire sign. The 1st house is the whole Rising sign from 0°, not from the Ascendant's exact degree. The MC can fall in the 9th, 10th or 11th house.

So a planet can be in the 8th house in one system and the 9th in another. The Whole Sign vs Placidus comparison shows your own planets in both, side by side. Neither system has been shown to be the correct one.

Read your own houses

Calculate your free birth chart with your date, recorded time and birthplace. The results list the house for each planet and the sign that starts each house.

To see how houses fit into a full written reading, look at the fictional sample reading first. If you want one for your own chart, the optional personal birth chart reading is paid and automated: it's assembled from Lunara's interpretation copy for your placements, not written or reviewed by an astrologer, and it isn't a consultation. The price is shown before you buy.
