Dominant planet calculator
Which planet is strongest in my chart? Astrologers answer that in different ways, and different methods pick different winners. This calculator uses one small, published scoring method: it gives each of your ten planets points for a few traditional signs of emphasis, shows every point, and keeps ties instead of choosing for you. It needs a recorded birth time and city.
Check your chart
Most of the points depend on your Ascendant, Midheaven and houses, which turn through the whole zodiac in a day. A guessed or noon time could hand points to the wrong planet, so this page only calculates from a recorded time. If you don’t have one, the free birth chart calculator below works with the time left blank. Free birth chart calculator.
Your birth details and chart are kept only in this page’s memory for this calculation, never in the page address or browser storage. If you open your full chart and buy a reading, the details needed to write it are stored with your order.
Example: a fictional chart
This is Lunara’s invented sample chart, not your chart or a real person’s: 1 January 1990, 12:00, London, the same fictional chart as the sample reading. Scored by the same rules as the form above.

How the points are counted
| Sun or Moon | +2 to start |
|---|---|
| In its traditional home sign | +3 (Sun Leo; Moon Cancer; Mercury Gemini, Virgo; Venus Taurus, Libra; Mars Aries, Scorpio; Jupiter Sagittarius, Pisces; Saturn Capricorn, Aquarius) |
| Angular house (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) | +3 |
| Succedent house (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) | +1 |
| Within 5° of the Ascendant | +5 |
| Within 5° of the Midheaven | +5 |
| Traditional ruler of the Ascendant’s sign | +4 |
| Major aspect with the Sun, and with the Moon | +1 each (conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition the chart already shows) |
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto have no home-sign points in this method. A planet counts once per luminary for aspects.
What “dominant planet” means here
Astrologers call a planet dominant when it stands out in a chart: close to the horizon or the top of the chart, in a sign it traditionally rules, ruling the rising sign, or strongly tied to the Sun and Moon. There’s no single agreed way to add those up. This page uses one small method, Lunara’s planet-emphasis score, and shows every point so you can disagree with it if your own tradition weighs things differently.
The score is not a percentage of you, a personality test or a forecast. A planet with few points is still part of your chart.
Dominant planet vs chart ruler
Your chart ruler is a separate, simpler idea: the planet that rules your Ascendant’s sign. It earns 4 points here, but it isn’t automatically the top scorer. To look at the chart ruler on its own, use the chart ruler calculator.

Frequently asked questions
- Is my dominant planet the same as my chart ruler?
- Not necessarily. Your chart ruler is simply the planet that rules your Ascendant’s sign. In this score the chart ruler gets 4 points, but another planet can still score higher, for example one sitting right on the Ascendant or Midheaven.
- Why might another site give me a different dominant planet?
- Because there’s no single agreed formula. Some methods count dignities in more detail, some use modern rulers, some weigh aspects to every planet or use different orbs. This page shows its whole method so you can see why your result came out the way it did.
- What if two planets tie?
- Then both are shown as co-leaders. The page never breaks a tie by itself, because the method gives no reason to prefer one.
- Does a low score mean a planet doesn’t matter in my chart?
- No. Every planet is part of your chart. A low score only means this particular method found fewer of its chosen signs of emphasis for that planet.
Method: Lunara’s central Swiss Ephemeris calculation, tropical zodiac, geocentric, Placidus houses. Aspects come from the same aspect engine as the full chart, with its usual orbs. Traditional rulers are used for home signs and the Ascendant ruler; modern rulers are a valid alternative this score doesn’t use. Text written with AI assistance.
